KRMC Allergy Clinic

The KRMC Allergy Clinic, run by GPs in conjunction with nursing staff, aims to diagnose and treat airborne allergens. Common airborne allergens include animal dander, house dust mites, mould spores and pollens (grass, trees, weed) – all of which can cause allergic rhinitis, leading to symptoms such as itching, mucous production and tearing.

Allergic rhinitis can impact sleep, concentration, learning and daily functioning.

The KRMC Allergy Clinic does not treat food or venom allergies.

To determine a patient’s allergy/allergies the Clinic uses a skin prick test (SPT) which is quick, safe and gives a very fast result. Once a diagnosis is made, allergies can be treated by a process known as immunotherapy or desensitisation. The SPT is conducted by a qualified Nurse, and results are given after 15 minutes. Skin prick testing is recognised as the gold standard for airborne allergy testing by the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy.

Immunotherapy and desensitization aim to eliminate allergies for good and are given in tablet form. These treatments prevent the body from overreacting to environmental substances that may be encountered on a daily basis. Patients can expect to see an improvement in symptoms from 4-10 weeks.

The Clinic is open to patients 8 years and above who suffer from allergic rhinitis.

Before your appointment please do the following:

Anti-histamine tablets: These need to be stopped 5 days prior to your appointment.

Anti-depressants. Some tri-cyclic anti-depressant tablets should also be stopped – however please consult your regular doctor to determine if this is appropriate for you. It is recommended that Endep, Dothep, Avanza, and Axit are stopped 7 days prior to your appointment.
