Are there any side effects from taking Medicinal Cannabis?
  • Like all prescribed medications, medical cannabis has the potential to produce side effects.
  • The extent of these side effects can vary with the type of Medicinal Cannabis product, and between individuals. In general, the side effects of CBD-rich products are less than those for high-THC products.
  • Known side effects (both CBD and THC) include appetite decrease or increase, confusion, convulsions, diarrhea, dry mouth, euphoria (feelings of extreme happiness), fatigue and sedation, fever, hallucinations or paranoid delusions, nausea and vomiting, psychosis, cognitive distortion (having untrue thoughts), and vertigo 2 .
  • Adjusting a patient’s prescription may offer relief from side effects or may do away with them altogether, however this cannot be guaranteed.
Does Medicinal Cannabis interact with other medications?
  • Possibly. As Medicinal Cannabis continues to be studied, more is to be learned about possible drug interactions.
  • This is why healthcare professionals should take a “start low, go slow” approach, with regular monitoring to assess possible interactions with other
medications. For this reason, it is essential
Can I drive while taking Medicinal Cannabis?
  • There are no known driving risks in relation to CBD-only products.
  • Given the psychoactive nature of THC, in all states and territories, it is an offence for license holders to operate vehicles or heavy machinery with detectable concentrations of THC in their system 3 .
  • This applies to any CBD/THC blend. Concentrations of THC can be detected in the saliva for many hours after administration 4 including during roadside police drug tests.
  • The above should function as guidance only. Please consult a medical professional for any questions.
Does Medicinal Cannabis show up in a urine drug test?
  • Patients should be aware that Medicinal Cannabis can be detected in the urine many days after ceasing use.
  • It may take up to five days for 80 to 90 per cent of the total dose to be excreted in the urine.
  • A healthcare professional can provide a letter confirming medical justification for taking Medicinal Cannabis if this is required by an employer.
What can I expect from follow-up appointments?
  • Follow-up appointments are scheduled for the following purposes:
 to adjust type, dosage and frequency of medication, if necessary
     to issue repeat prescriptions
 to complete any necessary health assessments and/or care plans as determined by
    your GP.
  • Appointments will be via Telehealth or face to face and will be scheduled in advance by a
    KRMC healthcare professional.
Where can I fill my script for medicinal cannabis?
  • Kildare Road Pharmacy is located on the ground floor of KRMC.
  • It stocks a wide range of Medicinal Cannabis products and will be able to fill your scripts.
  • In the uncommon event that your product is not in stock, Kildare Road Pharmacy will order it in.
How should I take my medicinal cannabis?
  • Most Medicinal Cannabis is prescribed orally (by oil, liquid capsule or spray).
  • When taken this way, effects are generally delayed for 30-90 minutes and peak effects can occur 2-4 hours after consumption.
  • For this reason, it is important to allow at least 3 hours between single oral doses, to avoid possible overdose.
  • New Medicinal Cannabis patients will be given a titration plan, covering 4-12 weeks.
  • This means that your dose will be increased at regular intervals during this time until the optimal dose is achieved.
  • The optimal dose is the lowest dose that achieves the highest benefit. It is important that you follow your individual titration plan, which is provided by the healthcare
    professional.
